They deemed the Provo/Orem area as the
#1 "The best city/area to live in".

In-Office Registration:Utah County Clerk's Office - October 7 - October 20, 8 am - 5 pm.

Absentee Ballots: Please call the Utah County Clerk's Office at 851-8128 to request an absentee ballot and an application form will be mailed to you. Please have all absentee requests made as early as possible and all applications in the mail as soon as possible to ensure your ballot arrives in time for the election.

You may check your registration and obtain your polling place location and sample ballot by going to the Lt. Governor's web site: http://elections.utah.gov/ OR by calling the County Elections Clerk at 851-8128.

Central Committee Meeting

Last night we had our Utah County Republican Party Central Committee Meeting. The legislators all got shirts with their last name and district #.There wasn't really any items of business, just lots of information about upcoming events and a few speakers.

Jason Chaffetz spoke about meeting our soldiers, spending the last few days in Sevier County, going to see miners in coal mines, and going to Alaska where he and several others, including Governor Palin, spoke in favor of drilling in ANWAR. As Vice President, Sarah Palin will help to bring drilling in ANWAR.

Our Legislative District had the best attendance. We had 25 officers/delegates there. I believe there are about 13 districts and our district has 22 precincts.


Things to note:
The RNC (Republican National Committee) has opened an office at 746 E. 820 N., in Provo. They can be reached at 374-9968. For the next 6 weeks The Utah County Republican Party will share the office with them. Just so you know they only have 5 McCain/Palin signs right now so give them a week or so before they get more in. They are also in need of volunteers to help with the phone banks. If you can help please stop by.

Save the U.S. Treasury $5M

This was sent to me - just something to think about!

A president's pension currently is $191,300 per year.

Assume the next president lives to age 80.

Sen McCain would receive ZERO pension as he would reach 80 at the end of two terms as president.

Sen Obama would be retired for 26 years after two terms and would receive $4,973,800 in pension.

Therefore it would certainly make MORE economic sense to elect McCain in November.

How's that for non-partisan thinking?

Attempted Child Abduction

Last week there were 2 attempted child abductions.

The first was around the Lakeview Elementary School. The man (20-30 yr) had a dark complexion, wavy hair, and a mustache. He was in a light blue truck.

The second was around Amelia Earhart Elementary School. This time the man was driving a white minivan, but the description is the same. The police believe this is the same man.

Please use this as a reminder to talk to your kids about stranger danger. It's always good to talk to them and help them to understand so that if they are ever in a terrible situation that the will instantly know what to do.

If you near these schools when kids are coming and leaving, you might want to spend a few minutes outside or watching out your window to make sure that the kids passing your yard do so in safety.

Why Women Should Vote

This was sent to me. I do not know who the original author is. I did do some research to see if the stories were true. Although I didn't look at every account, I did find supporting material from the National Archives and other resources. I think all women should understand what it took to have the freedom to vote.

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE - {author unknown}

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because- -why, exactly?

We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's new movie 'Iron Jawed Angels.' {Christy's side note - this movie came out in 2004} It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say.

I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she said. 'What would those women think of the way I use, or don't use, my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.'

The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.'

HBO released the movie on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party - remember to vote.

History is being made.
